Voter turnout was up in the 2006 (39th) Federal election, with 64.9% of registered Canadian electors casting a ballot, up from 60.5% in 2004. We hope this is a turn around, since in most western democracies, the overall trend in voting is downward. The previous (38th) General Election saw the lowest total since Confederation. More voters stayed home than voted for the winning party.
The most serious trend is with young voters. Many feel alienated and disconnected from democratic ideals, citizenship and their own governments.
In 2004, only 25% of those under 25 bothered to vote, and just 38% of those 18-30. A new study by the Canadian Council on Learning shows that a lack of civics education in schools is partly responsible for the poor record among young voters.
At the Civics Channel, we're working through teaching, training, research, exploration, contact, debate, collaborative learning and the sharing of know-how, to make a positive impact on the way Canadians see their vote.
